MEET THE PLUMPS // AMIE MCCARRON // MAKER

By Helen //

INSIDER

Today we are having a yarn with our very own Amie, she makes all kinds of lovely woollen goodies for us here at Plump & Co and we love her for it!

amie mccarron makings, crochet and knitting using chunky merino yarn made in nz

Where were you born?

Hamilton. Raised in Cambridge, but Wellington is my true home.

Favourite activities in your teens?

Sewing clothes, drawing, pottery – basically anything creative.

Did you have any nicknames growing up?

Being a redhead, you can probably guess a few but my dad made up for it by calling me “Petal”.

What inspired you to you start knitting & crochet, and how old were you when you first picked up those needles, or hook?

My mum knitted lovely jumpers and my nana crocheted beautiful shawls so I learnt both in my early teens.

You’ve done knitting + crochet, how would you compare them, and which takes the cake for you?

Crochet is faster and great for making things for the home. But I love to knit things I can wear even if I am the world’s slowest knitter when it comes to standard yarn.  Now that I can knit with giant yarn I think I love it more!

Who are some other knitting or crochet artists that inspire your makings?

I follow so many textile artists I really couldn’t choose. I am inspired by anyone who is passionate about their craft and the things they create.

What is your favourite piece of work that you’ve ever made?

I think the ottoman made using Plump & Co's grey 1 ply yarn. My husband has claimed one for himself even!

Extreme knitting homewares ottaman made using super bulky chunky merino wool yarn by Plump & Co. Perfect for arm knitting.

When you’re not making a masterpiece, where would we find you?

Playing with my dogs, spending time with friends or helping at a fashion boutique.

If you had all the chunky yarn in the world at your dispense what would be a wild creation that you’d make?

Imagine a huge tent for glamping!

What’s something most of your followers on instagram wouldn’t know about you?

I am an artist who paints using raw beeswax, resin and coloured pigments using butane torches, heat guns and irons.

1 ply or 2 ply chunky yarn?

Sculptural art verses soft and cuddly – both?!

What slogan do you keep in your back pocket to keep positive?

Around the corner it gets better.

Aside from creating what are 3 things you’re passionate about?

My gorgeous pets (3 dogs and 2 cats), fashion, and food

What’s 1 thing you can’t live without?

My husband of 19 years and 8 months

What was it about knitting & crocheting that kept you with those needles & hook in your hand?

I need to be creating things. I can’t just sit and watch TV – I have to knit or crochet as well.

What/where do you turn to for inspiration?

Nature – land, water, sky, universe.

What’s a piece of advice you’d give to any beginner knitter or crocheter & what would you suggest their first creation to be?

Enjoy the act of creating – it doesn’t have to be perfect in your own eyes. People won’t see what you think is a mistake. The first thing I ever knitted was a “hot water bottle”. Perfect item for a beginner as you only feel it’s awesomeness as it hides under the blankets.

Lastly, sweet or savoury?

Savoury
